I hope that someone who really knows the answer (perhaps someone in the medical or naturopathic field) can help. Why is it recommended not to take saw palmetto if you are on birth control? What sort of effects can it have? What does it mean when it says that theoretically it can interfere with birth control? If Saw Palmetto acts in a similar way as Spironolactone, and it is recommended that you are on birth control when taking Spiro, than why isn’t it the same for Saw Palmetto?
A female would want to take Saw Palmetto if she has elevated levels of androgens, or skin sensitivity to the normal levels of adrogens (such as testosterone) in her body. Such effects are acne, hair growth, alopecia, etc. Saw Palmetto works as an anti-androgen in a few differnt ways, and I have read that it is effective in women with PCOS and other androgen related hormonal issues. However, in theory it should not be taken while a woman is on birht control. I want to know why that is. What effects/properties would it produce?

Answer by pool_boy_77 Saw Palmetto is an ingredient that is suppose to help reduce enlarged prostates in men. The prostate enlarges when there is an imbalance in hormones and a man becomes what is called estrogen dominant. Perhapps the Saw Palmetto has an effect on estorgen. Sorry couldn’t help more than that.
